How You Can Take Action on Global Warming
The scientific verdict is in: Global warming is real, it's already underway and human activity - particularly the burning of fossil fuels - is a substantial cause. A growing number of scientists say we have only 10 years to substantially change how we use energy, or the impacts of climate change will be beyond our control.
Global warming is largely the result of decisions that each of us makes every minute of every day as energy consumers. Of particular concern are our use of electricity, which most often is generated with fossil fuels, and our consumption of gasoline in transportation. Coal and oil are major sources of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming.
By taking simple, well-known steps to use energy more efficiently - and by demonstrating to our colleagues, neighbors and children how to take personal responsibility for climate protection - each of us can become a force for change.
Take action by following this simple, four-part strategy. Click on each Step for details.
You can make a difference.
Recent studies have shown that while most Americans accept that global warming is real and requires action, many of us are skeptical that we can solve a problem so large. Many Americans also think that global warming is a future problem that should be solved by future generations. But global warming and some of its troubling consequences - for example, more severe storms and higher insurance rates -- already are underway.
As for our power to make a difference, consider: If people can increase global warming, then people can reduce it. Global warming is in large part the sum of how each of us uses energy every day; climate protection is the sum of how each of us acts to reduce carbon emissions.
Take action to become carbon neutral. It will be good for your budget, good for the country, good for the planet and good for our children and grandchildren, who will inherit the world we are creating today.
